Ingredients
- 2 cups cooked butternut squash (mashed or cubed)
- 2 apples, peeled and sliced
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup butter (melted)
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- Pinch of nutmeg
- Salt to taste
- 1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs or crushed buttery crackers for topping
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a baking dish.
- In a large bowl, mix the squash, sliced apples, brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt.
- Transfer the mixture to the baking dish and spread evenly.
- Top with breadcrumbs or crushed crackers, and sprinkle nuts if using.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes, until the top is golden and apples are tender.
- Let cool slightly before serving warm.
Chef’s Note: This casserole makes a beautiful holiday side dish or a sweet-savory weeknight addition. Try using acorn squash or even pumpkin for variety.
